TEAM Arizona Riding Tip August 2012: Take the Bite Out of Tar Snakes

Motorcycle Tar Snakes Image In an effort to keep traffic flowing on aging roadway systems, government agencies, especially in Arizona, resort to using crack sealant on our roads.  The aim is to prevent the road from cracking further and creating a situation where replacement of the road becomes immediately necessary.  This type of road repair may not mean a lot to “cagers”, those drivers of four wheeled vehicles, but it means a heckuva lot to us two-wheeled fun seekers.

A motorcycle’s traction can be compromised by the bituminous rubberized asphalt sealer used for crack repair.  In the winter or summer, these sealed cracks can pose quite the traction challenges for riders.  How do we as riders deal with the reduced traction available when these materials are present on the roadway?

RIDING WELL UNDER ADVERSE CONDITIONS

There are several things we can do deal with the situation today and in the future.  First, we’ll identify the best mental and physical state to approach tar snakes:

  • Mentally, approach the tar snakes as you would any obstacle
    • Be aware of the danger yet remain flexible mentally; be open to new possibilities
    • Accept that the motorcycle may move around beneath you and that traction is less than perfect
    • Visualize a positive outcome
  • Physically, approach the tar snakes as you would any obstacle
    • Reduce speed
    • Approach the tar snakes at 90 degrees where possible, no less than 45 degrees preferably
    • Remain loose on the motorcycle; tightening up or establishing a “death grip” on the motorcycle will only create issues
    • Operate the throttle or brakes in a gradual, slow, and precise fashion

Of course additional training courses at TEAM Arizona work too.  Spending more time in the saddle on the road will build your chops and gain you more experience with these situations.

We want to hear about your experiences with tar snakes.  Tell us your story and start a discussion on our Facebook page!
