Is there a better way to represent Dual Sport month than with Sara Middleton, a female dual sport rider and owner of a KLR 650?  For those of you who relate to people who grab life by the scruff of the neck and take life for a ride, you’re gonna love Sara!

In a very personal submission, Sara told us how she ventured into motorcycling.  Upon receiving her email, we knew instantly that we needed to share her story with the TEAM Arizona family.  In her own words:

Motorcycles were always a love of mine. I thought it would be selfish to ride while raising kids so I held off awhile.

I had a problem with drinking alcohol most of my life. I finally gave it up completely and sobered up in January 2010. Exactly one year later, a month after my 51st birthday and my one year sobriety anniversary, I took the Basic RiderCourse class. I wanted to “reward ” myself with something special and different. I didn’t have any expectations; just wanted to try it. Well, I loved the class so much I wanted a bike after that! I soon found a great deal on a VStar 650. Four months (and a lot of miles) later, I bought a Heritage Softail Classic. The next year I added a KLR and now I ride on road and off!

I’m three years sober as of January 2013. I still love riding and as long as I don’t drink I will ride; it is my new “high”!

Sara advanced through the training ranks quickly.  After her Basic RiderCourse, she followed up with a Confident RiderCourse and one year later, the Total Control Level 1 Clinic.  With all the mountain riding around Show Low, we’re sure she gets to use the Ten Steps to Proper Cornering.

We thank Sara for her bravery, candidness, and willingness to share her story with all of us.  Life is full of potholes and rough roads; we are proud to share the asphalt with her.
