RiderCoaches are the backbone of the RiderCourse training system. During the RiderCoach Preparation Course you'll learn the nuts and bolts of teaching the MSF's Basic RiderCourse (BRC). You will be trained to teach the Experienced RiderCourse (ERC) after you have gained experience teaching the BRC.
Who teaches the RiderCoach Preparation course? MSF-certified Coach Trainers teach the course. These specially trained Coaches have completed the MSF's RiderCoach Trainer Course and are authorized to train candidates for MSF RiderCoach certification. What qualifications do I need to enroll? You must be a licensed motorcyclist who currently rides on a frequent, routine basis and you should have several years of varied street riding experience. You will need to have maintained a good driving and riding license record. As a teacher, you will need good communication skills. As a Coach, you'll be called upon to give your time to help teach RiderCourses. A sincere desire to help reduce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and deaths is the prime motivator of RiderCoaches. In addition, you should have completed or audited a complete Basic RiderCourse within twelve months prior to enrolling in the RiderCoach Preparation Course. Also, you should have worked as a RiderCoach Aide for at least one full BRC within the last six months prior to the RiderCoach Preparation workshop. What does the course cover and what are the completion requirements? As part of the course, you'll be required to pass a riding-skill test. It is the same test used in the BRC; however, the standards are higher for RiderCoach Candidates. During the course, you'll learn how to conduct the BRC curriculum. You'll practice teaching in the classroom. You'll learn how to manage the range exercises and how to evaluate and coach students as they develop their riding skills. At the end of the training portion of the course, you'll be given a knowledge test. You must pass this test to continue in the program. The course culminates as you and your classmates teach a complete BRC to a group of new riders. Your teaching performance will be evaluated by the Coach Trainers. Successfully completing student teaching is your final requirement to qualify for MSF RiderCoach certification. What is the course schedule? The course is approximately 72 hours long. Course schedules will vary; you should plan on four weekends of intense training. The 8.5-day course schedule varies; it is usually four weekends of training with one or two weekends off. When is the course offered? Whenever T.E.A.M. Arizona Motorcyclist Training Centers has a need for more Coaches. Typically there is at least one RCP each year. What does the course cost? The cost to train a new RiderCoach is $550. For candidates who agree to make themselves available to work for T.E.A.M. Arizona at least 10 weekends per calendar year the fee is typically reduced to $250, T.E.A.M. Arizona will cover the remainder. Where is the course offered? Although T.E.A.M. Arizona Motorcyclist Training Centers has training centers throughout the state, our Prep courses are normally conducted at our facility in Gilbert , Arizona What else should I know? If you enroll in a course, always go prepared to ride! Every day! Required riding gear includes a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection; over-the-ankle, sturdy leather footwear; sturdy long pants; long-sleeved shirt or jacket; and full-fingered gloves (preferably leather). Be prepared to spend time during off-class hours to study. This in an intensive program that requires a lot of work and concentration. Do not enroll unless you can attend every class meeting. After receiving your Coach certification from MSF you will still need to become licensed by the State of Arizona . This will require an additional 28 hours of on-the-job training as an apprentice Coach, to result in a total of 100 hours combined training. After you have completed these requirements you will file an application with MVD, along with another copy of your driving record and a criminal history background check by DPS. Once all of these requirements have been satisfied you will be issued a Motorcycle Rider Instructor’s License and will be able to assume a position of responsibility at Rider Courses.
