Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are there any entry prerequisites for the street courses?

Yes, for the beginner's course you do not need to have any motorcycle riding experience, but you do need to have sound bicycle riding skills. You will need to have the ability to balance and stabilize a two-wheeled vehicle before we can begin to teach you to ride a motorcycle. If you have basic balance problems, you may be dismissed from the course. If you have not ridden a bicycle in a long time it would be a good idea to get some practice before attempting to ride a motorcycle. This course is designed for brand new, inexperienced, riders.
For the Intermediate course you need to have your own motorcycle and sound basic riding skills. This course is designed primarily for new riders and is a skill building course.
Participants in the Experienced and Advanced Rider Courses should have 6 months or 6 thousand miles of current riding experience. Theses courses are rider's skill tune-ups.

2. Do I need to have a motorcycle license or permit for this course?

Not for the Beginner's course.
For the Intermediate course you need to have at least a permit, after all, you'll be riding you motorcycle to class.
For the Experienced course you should have a license, but a permit is acceptable.
Advanced Rider Course participants must be properly endorsed.

3. Will I get my motorcycle license at the end of the course?

You will receive a "Driver Education Program Certificate of Completion" when you have satisfactorily met the course completion requirements. When you take the certificate into a Driver's License office they will issue you a new license with the "M" endorsement added. This certificate is issued only to riders who complete either a Beginner or Intermediate level course.

4. Will I have to take a test at MVD?

No, a written and a riding test are incorporated into the curriculum of the beginner's course. The Intermediate course incorporates a riding skills evaluation.

5. I do not have an Arizona Driver's License, what do I do?

That depends. First check with your home state's licensing authority. They may accept documentation from Arizona without question.
If that will not work, get an Arizona Driver's license after class. You can trade in your home state license for an Arizona license, the motorcycle endorsement will be added at that time. When you go home, the endorsement should stay.

6. Do I need to bring my own bike and riding gear?

In the beginner's course we will furnish you with a motorcycle, D.O.T. approved helmet, and a pair of gloves. You will be responsible for eye protection, long sleeves and long pants, and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear. For both the Intermediate and Experienced Rider Courses you will need to furnish your own motorcycle. If you are using someone else's machine you will need to have written permission from the registered owner. For both of the advanced courses you should be able to provide your own safety gear, although we are able to provide some helmets and gloves for those riders who don't have their own. You will need to arrive with eye protection, long sleeves and long pants, and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear. If your class will involve evening riding, your eyewear must not be tinted!

7. Can I ride my own bike in the beginner's course?

Yes, as long as it is under 500cc, but it is not recommended. During the course you will be expected to perform a number of exercises. You may find that you are reluctant to perform some of the exercises, especially if you have a large, heavy motorcycle. There are no adjustments made to the exercises for different sizes of motorcycles and if you find that you are unable to operate your own motorcycle under the course conditions it may be too late to switch to one of the course bikes. If you do choose to ride your own motorcycle in the beginner's course, Motorcycle Safety Foundation policy is that you must have a valid motorcycle permit, and you must ride your own motorcycle to the class.

8. What types of bikes will be provided?

All of our bikes are standard layout, up to 500 cc, Most are between 125cc and 250cc. This makes them compact, lightweight, and as easy as possible to learn on. We have a variety of sizes and styles of motorcycles; standard, dual purpose, cruisers, and even some sport bikes. The mix of machines varies each weekend. Motorcycles are matched to students by seat height and rider inseam length, not by style. Sorry, but we cannot guarantee bike selection.

9. Does everyone pass the class?

As much as we would enjoy having every student pass their course, it does not always happen. The Basic Rider Course was designed to allow a majority of novice riders to develop the essential road riding skills within the standard course structure. Because riding a motorcycle involves the acquisition of physical skills, we know that not everyone will be successful on their first attempt. In the time that we have been training new riders, we have found that over 92% will be successful in their initial class. Students requiring additional practice time will arrange for private, or small group, instruction. Extra charges will apply for extended instructional services.

10. What happens if I fail the class?

This is not a big problem. If you should fail one of the tests, written or riding, you will have to return to one of our locations and re-take the test. You have 30 days in which to complete the course. Your first re-test will be at no charge.

11. I'd really like to take a training course, but I'm not in Arizona...

There are rider training sites nationwide. If you can't come out to Arizona (winter is a great time to visit) there is probably a course near you. Check with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation at www.msf-usa.org, or try this link to a training site map.

12. I am under 18, what should I do?

When you are under 18 years of age, Arizona requires that you ride with a motorcycle permit for 5 months, or until you are 18. In order to obtain a permit you will have to go to a driver's license testing office and take the Arizona Motorcycle written test. Once you have completed the riding class, the licensing certificate which you will receive will be valid for 6 months. After 5 months passes, take the permit and the class certificate to MVD for your motorcycle endorsement. You do not have to wait until you begin our course to obtain your permit, you can take the Arizona test at any time. The sooner that you complete the permit requirement, the shorter your wait after class before you can apply for your license endorsement.

13. My schedule does not fit any of your classes, am I out of luck?

There is probably still a way to work out a suitable schedule. There are two restrictions that we need to work with. First, the course segments must be taken in order. Second, we need to keep both of the riding days in the same class. Keeping that in mind, it is possible to take the first classroom session up to one month before participating in the remainder of the course. As long as we can keep all of the riding sessions contained in a single scheduled class, there will be no fee to accommodate this type of schedule change. If your schedule will require you to arrange for a private instruction session, or to ride in two separate courses, additional fees will be involved. These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, so give us a call and we will see what possibilities are available.

14. What if I do not show up to my scheduled class?

Spaces in the courses are limited. Not unlike an airline reservation, the class will go on even if you are not there. If you do not attend a scheduled class, and do not provide us with at least 48 hours notice, you will forfeit your course fee. All cancelled reservations are subject to a $15 administrative fee, this fee increases when you cancel with less than 10 days notice.
